i like all the advances, but the new instruments excite me the most, as well as the productivity enhancements. i really trust MOTU. they are not version whores, as some companies are (no offense against actual whores intended). when they release a new upgrade, they mean it! i really like them as a company and think they do careful QA and release pretty-near bulletproof upgrades with intelligent features. have you really honestly felt ripped off by them?

No, I haven't felt ripped off by them at all, but I only had to upgrade once (from os9 to x). So my fear is ungrounded ;-)

I love motu as well, am extremely thankful for their products & services.

        Bright blessings!

              Ariana et al,

Yikes -- i'm still using DP 4.12 on my dual 2ghz G5 (and it's still running OSX 10.3.9, even). I'm such a lamer!

              Regards,

John, who really does plan on upgrading to Tiger and DP 4.6 soon

brother john, 4.6 is truly worth it! and 5 is surely even better. and tiger is cool. come on in, the water is warm! there's stuff in 4.6 and 5 that should've been there all along...

                  Jeff,

Yeah, I run Tiger on my 1.5ghz 12" PowerBook G4, just not on "the music machine" (though I do use my PowerBook for music, though it's mostly live stuff, or when I need to be portable). The biggest headaches i've found with 4.12 are:

                  1. the very flakey ReWire implementation -- if I have it ReWired to Live 5 or Reason 3, I have to be very careful of which transport control I use ... if I do fwd / rewind / play / stop / scrub through DPs transport control, all is cool ... but if I space out for a bit and use the trasport controls of the ReWired app, it often goes pear shaped, and I have to kill DP and the other app(s).

                  2. the hoops that I need to jump through to use Absynth 3 with DP -- while I still use my Roland XP80 and Yamaha DX7IIFD for the majority of my synth work, i've been using software synths more often, and making Absynth or Reason work with Live is much easier than making them work with DP 4.12.

... aside from those, I really, really like DP. I have a TC|PowerCore DSP board in there (one of the first ones) and a MOTU Traveler, and with the exceptions of the above stuff, everything works really well, and it sounds really good to me. I'm just kind of conservative when it comes to my music machine ... does DP 4.6 address any of the above issues?

                  Regards,

                  John

i'm not sure about those specific issues -- try calling MOTU and asking! i would assume integration with rewire and absynth are goals they'd want to meet.

That's okay, this engineer I was working with was still doing all his recording (not his mixing though) in DP3. I couldn't figure...

Could be worse things... (like a bad ear, or all the latest gizmos and no clue how to work them...)

                ;-)

                  Ariana et al,

OK, I finally did it -- I went and purchased the DP4.5 upgrade, and now i'm downloading the 4.61 update. I'm going to put it on my PowerBook first to make sure it's not going to go pear-shaped on me (I use the PowerBook for music -- mostly live and when I need to be portable -- but the dual G5 is my main music box, and i'm careful about putting things on there unless I know they work).

So anyway, now i've another big box to add to my collection :-)

                  Regards,

                  John
