Hello, all ...
I run DP 5.12, but a friend of mine still runs 4.52. He's new to it, so I am trying to help him. What we tried to do was simple: set up a software synth, play it via a USB controller, and record the audio genertated by said softsynth on another DP track.
What we found was this: In DP5, I just have to add an instrument track (I chose Virus|PowerCore, but I also tried it with Spectrasonics' Atmosphere with success as well), then add a MIDI track to connect my Korg Kontrol49 to the instrument, and i'm able to play the Virus from the Korg. If I want to record the audio on another DP track, I just route the Virus' outputs to a bus instead of the audio outs (a MOTU Traveler in my case), then add a stereo audio track taking its' inputs from the same bus and set its' outputs to the audio outs. This works fine in DP5.
However, when we tried to do the same thing in DP 4.52, it wasn't quite as easy. Setting up the instrument (he chose NIs Kontakt) and MIDI tracks was the same, and we were able to play Kontakt via his controller (M-Audio Keystation). This made him happy, but when we tried to record Kontakt's audio output to a stereo audio track in DP, our experiences diverged. We tried routing the Kontakt track's output to a bus and adding another stereo audio track to take input from the bus and send it out his audio outs (a Roland UA700 I believe). What we found was that we could no longer hear ourselves playing when we did this (recording the audio worked, but without hearing yourself, it's difficult). We had to create an Aux track to get around this, but this presented its' own problems when we tried to play Kontakt live with the M-Audio while adding DPs eVerb to the track (so we can play with a reverb applied). I never had these sorts of issues with DP5, so i'm wondering ... are we just doing something wrong, or is DP5 really better than DP4.5 at this?
Regards,
John, who used to run DP4.5 and had similar issues, but has had none of them since moving up to DP5 (yay!)

Re: DP5 vs. DP4.5: software synths
Sun, June 24, 2007 - 1:41 PMHaven't had any software synth issues with DP 5, but I'm a guitar guy. Has your friend gotten all the updates from Motu? It also might be a good idea for him to download the latest drivers for all his hardware periperals...

Re: DP5 vs. DP4.5: software synths
Mon, June 25, 2007 - 11:26 AMIf you're friend is running DP4.52 then he really should get the free update to 4.6
www.motu.com/products/so.../features46/
All you need to do is setup a AUX track, as well, that accepts the BUS input from Kontakt so you can reference (listen) to what you recording from Kontakt into your AUDIO track that is receiving the input from the BUS signal as well. :)
Then you're good to go. :)
As long as rewire is working smoothly with Ableton 6, I'm very happy with DP 4.6. :)
Peace and MOTU,
Quasga

Al, Quasga ...
I'll ask my friend to try this. I used to run DP4.61 until I upgraded to 5, but I only recently began using softsynth plugins more. Sure, I would occasionally use Reason for some background fx, but I usually use my hardware synths (Yamaha DX7IIFD E!, Roland XP80, Yamaha Motif ES6). I only started experimenting with softsynth plugins more after I upgraded to DP5, and I was a bit surprised that DP 4.5x behaves a bit differently (read: in DP5, to monitor _and_ record the audio output of a softsynth like the Virus|PowerCore, I only need an instrument track, a MIDI track to control it and an audio track to record the softsynth audio ... in DP 4.5x, an Aux track is needed, otherwise we couldn't monitor what we were playing). Since my friend is using all softsynths (he bought the NI Komplete 4 bundle) on a dual 2ghz G5 that I sold him, I want to help him to get a good DP / Mac experience.
BTW, I like DP5 quite a lot, and so far he likes DP4.5 quite a lot as well.
Regards,
John

Re: DP5 vs. DP4.5: software synths
Mon, June 25, 2007 - 3:13 PMIt seems MOTU did make it less complicated with DP5 if the Aux track is no longer necessary. That will be nice when
I get around to upgrading. ;) I don't anything about Reason.... never used it.... but was referring to the rewire function
that midi syncs and audio bus links Ableton Live and DP to work harmoniously and flexibly with each other. I love
this functionality. ;)
I'm farily new to softsynths myself but an outboard fanatic, too having 8 real synths. Couln't imagine life without an
Access Indigo anymore. :)
Just wanted to confirm that what you're doing works proper on my end so it could be a matter of the update. Keep in mind
that certain plug-ins / softsynths can and will be buggy with DP especially if they are not MAS or AU and being run
through a VST wrapper. But even I encounter an occasional AU plug-in / softsynth that is buggy with DP.
I had a personal encounter with the Metric Halo : Channel Insert plugin (which is really nice) but creates this weird bug in DP4.6 Project file where it locks
up the sequencer from starting playback. It doesn't freeze or crash the program, it just keeps the sequencer from going. Once I delete the plugin from an insert the project immediately returns to a properly working state. Weird stuff in the DAW from time to time for sure. ;)
