Yet, DP5 doesn't seem to ask me, and I can't seem to find which preference to set that controls this. I have the manual, and the box, and the discs, but don't know how to make DP5 make a copy of audio when I do stuff that will change it.
Do you have different sequences in each host running in tandem? Do you use live as an advanced beetbox/synth/sampler and then actually just record the output into DP audio Channels? I'd love to know the benefits of both and hear of any other setups or ideas.
One thing that I've gathered is that it's not very good if you want to try and wire a pre-existing liveset into DP because it disables all Vst and AU use.

Until now, i've used Digltal Performer mainly for audio and very rarely for MIDI. I'm now using it for MIDI tracks (right now for virtual instruments like the V-Station|PowerCore and Spectrasonics Atmopshere) again, and i'm a bit confiused. I'm trying to draw volume controller info as a ramp / fade from the last point, but DP doesn't interpret it as such -- it just drops / increases the volume to the value I drew right there. I've been able to do the MIDI volume fade / ramp I want by using "Create Continuous Data" for controller 7 between the last point and the current point, but this is nowhere near as intuitive as drawing volume fades / ramps on pure audio tracks. I'm thinking that there has got to be an easier way ... I must be doing something wrong. Would someone illuminate me?

I'm new to DP (4.6.1) and I was wondering if there is a way (hopefully a simple one) to move tracks from a Pro-Tools session to DP? The reason I need to do this is I'd like to mix on my Mac using DP, instead of paying the Pro-Tools person to mix.

The Pro-Tools session is a live multi-track band session with various lead/backing over-dubs added after.

No mixing has been done yet, so, no fade/pan moves in the session.

I've been reading about OMF transfers, but haven't gotten any consistent info on this.

Anyone have any experience doing this?
Hello, all ...

I run DP 5.12, but a friend of mine still runs 4.52. He's new to it, so I am trying to help him. What we tried to do was simple: set up a software synth, play it via a USB controller, and record the audio genertated by said softsynth on another DP track.

What we found was this: In DP5, I just have to add an instrument track (I chose Virus|PowerCore, but I also tried it with Spectrasonics' Atmosphere with success as well), then add a MIDI track to connect my Korg Kontrol49 to the instrument, and i'm able to play the Virus from the Korg. If I want to record the audio on another DP track, I just route the Virus' outputs to a bus instead of the audio outs (a MOTU Traveler in my case), then add a stereo audio track taking its' inputs from the same bus and set its' outputs to the audio outs. This works fine in DP5.

However, when we tried to do the same thing in DP 4.52, it wasn't quite as easy. Setting up the instrument (he chose NIs Kontakt) and MIDI tracks was the same, and we were able to play Kontakt via his controller (M-Audio Keystation). This made him happy, but when we tried to record Kontakt's audio output to a stereo audio track in DP, our experiences diverged. We tried routing the Kontakt track's output to a bus and adding another stereo audio track to take input from the bus and send it out his audio outs (a Roland UA700 I believe). What we found was that we could no longer hear ourselves playing when we did this (recording the audio worked, but without hearing yourself, it's difficult). We had to create an Aux track to get around this, but this presented its' own problems when we tried to play Kontakt live with the M-Audio while adding DPs eVerb to the track (so we can play with a reverb applied). I never had these sorts of issues with DP5, so i'm wondering ... are we just doing something wrong, or is DP5 really better than DP4.5 at this?

Regards,

This is probably DP 101 in nature, but while I hunt through the manual I wanted to make a query here. I just managed to set up my Motif ES6 (with mLAN card) and have DP recognize the synth as an audio interface along with my Traveler. If I record-enable a track in DP with the input set to one of the mLAN outputs and the output set to a set of outputs on the Traveler and press Record, audio is recorded. If I play back this audio, I can hear it on the Traveler outputs. However, I can't monitor it e.g. the track is record-enabled, input / output are set as I described, but I need to record the audio and play it back before I can hear it.

I never ran into this problem using just DP (4.61) and my Traveler, though I remember running into it when I tried to use Reason via ReWire. Since I don't use Reason much, I didn't pursue a solution. Now, I need to ... and so far, it has eluded me. Would anyone here assist?

I always get this messed up -- here I am, with DP 4.12 (haven't received the DP 4.6 upgrade in the mail yet) and Ableton Live 5 running as a rewire slave on my dual 2ghz G5. I set a stereo audio track to get its' input from Ableton Live Mix L1-R2, and I can see it in the audio monitor, but can't hear it when I press play. The track is play- (set to outs 1 and 2 of my Traveler) and record-enabled, and if I press record, the audio from Live is recorded on the track, but I don't want to record it yet -- I just want to hear / monitor it.

I also tried setting up an Aux track to get its' input from Live and send its' output to bus 1-2, and have another track get its' input from bus 1-2 and send its' out to 1-2 of the Traveler, but no dice ... no audio. Grrr.

Can anyone assist? I'm missing one little step, though I don't know what it is.

I have a lot of DAW experience but it's all in Cubase on Windows. I don't have a mac, nor can I afford one at the moment, so I can't practice at home. Needles to say the ability to practice at home would be invaluable to speeding up the process of the internship actually turning into a job (which the studio incidentally needs too). My only hope for getting an immediate setup going would be if I could find a program that runs OS X over Windows or Linux...anyone know if this exists? (If Linux can run on top of Windows I don't see any reason why OS X shouldn't be able to, except for the fact that OS X is proprietary and Linux isn't. But perhaps Macintosh has seen some use in developing a program to do this or somebody has figured out a way to make OS X "think" it's running on a Mac.) Anyone know? I'm checking the internet too of course but this is worth a shot.

I don't need great performance, just enough to SEE the functions I'm reading about in the manual.

And in case your wondering the studio is aware of my lack of experience with Macs. I know my way around a *n?x system so I shouldn't have too hard a time picking it up.

I am literally just starting to explore this new version, and I have come to the conclusion that the Cube's time has come and gone. DP runs OK on it, but I can't do too many tracks or effects (naturally).

Has anyone integrated Reason with Performer?
I just got Reason, and am trying to figure out how to actually use the two together.
Of course, it would help if I could figure out how to use Reason in general! LOL!
